Well, the answer is: NOT nothing! It was thought to have been a remnant of our evolution and was used to break down plant matter, or at least Darwin said so… It is not surprising people think it doesn’t serve a purpose. It is very likely to get infected and, if left untreated, you could die. Even today, scientists are still not sure what it’s exact purpose is.
There is one theory that looks very promising: it is a save house for your gut flora, containing all the basis bacteria your digestive channel needs after a good diarrhoea.
Although it is interesting to see what they’ll find on this in the future, I’m still hoping I’m not missing a very important part of my body!
